Haig Colliery Mining Museum is situated high on the cliffs above Whitehaven with magnificent views across to the Scottish Hills and the Isle of Man. The museum is a twenty minute detour from the famous Coast to Coast Walk and within yards of the Cumbria Coastal Way. The Steam Winding Engine is operated every day, but please call the museum (01946 599949) to ensure that maintenance is not being carried out.
HOW TO FIND THE MUSEUM
BY RAIL
Whitehaven is connected by rail to Carlise or Barrow. British Rail enquiries can be reached on 01228 44711. The Virigin West Coast Line telephone number is 0345 484950. The Railway Station in Whitehaven is opposite the Bus Station.
BY CAR
Haig is situated at Kells, 1/2 a mile south of Whitehaven. Leave the town centre towards St Bees and follow the brown signs for Haig Mining Museum. Car Parking is available.
BY BUS
Take an 01 bus from the Bus Station, Preston Street, or Duke Street. Buses leave on the hour or at 20 or 40 minutes past the hour. The journey takes nine minutes.
BY FOOT
A footpath up and along the cliffs begins behind the Beacon Centre. The walk takes about ten minutes. A leaflet is available from the Tourist Information Centre, the Beacon Centre, and by post from the museum. Information is included on the mining remains and history of the walk. More leaflets are planned for the future.
